Rail Traffic for July and the Week Ending July 31, 2021

U.S. railroads originated 904,670 carloads in July 2021, up 6.6 percent, or 55,969 carloads, from July 2020. U.S. railroads also originated 1,066,169 containers and trailers in July 2021, up 1.5 percent, or 15,450 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in July 2021 were 1,970,839, up 3.8 percent, or 71,419 carloads and intermodal units from July 2020.

Metro announced a delay of at least five months to complete construction of the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station. Prior to the announcement, Metro notified the City of Alexandria of the delay.

SEPTA Announces Regional Rail Service Adjustments for Upcoming Work

SEPTA will further efforts to rebuild a critical portion of Regional Rail infrastructure in the University City area as part of the Southwest Connection Improvement Program. The work is scheduled to take place on weekends in August (August 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, and 28-29) and will require major service adjustments that will impact customers who use the Airport, Media/Elwyn and Wilmington/Newark Lines.

Maine Governor Adds Name to Growing List of Supporters of the CSX/Pan Am Merger

CSX Corp. announced  that its proposed merger with New England’s Pan Am Railway’s Inc. (Pan Am) gained additional support from Maine Governor Janet Mills as well as four shippers, two municipalities, and one member of the New York State Assembly who all filed letters with the Surface Transportation Board (STB) enthusiastically backing the deal.
