Rail Traffic for the Week Ending July 24, 2021

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending July 24, 2021. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 503,219 carloads and intermodal units, up 4.6 percent compared with the same week last year.

Ontario’s GO Transit is increasing rail service starting August 7th as passengers continue to return to transit.  The news includes the announcement of all-day, hourly trips between Hamilton’s West Harbour GO and Toronto Union Station.

Port Jervis Transportation History Center Is Now On Track

Exactly thirteen months after the initial proposal was submitted to the City  of Port Jervis, New York, the new railroad equipment for the Port Jervis Transportation History
Center is on track for arrival at the historic Erie turntable site in late summer and early fall of 2021.  Operation Toy Train, an all-volunteer non-profit organization that collects toy donations for the
U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation, signed its final agreements with the Outdoor Club of Port Jervis and the City of Port Jervis yesterday to bring its historic railroad
equipment to the City-owned property.

CSX Announces Second Quarter EPS of $0.52, Including $0.12 Benefit from Sale of Property Rights to the Commonwealth of Virginia

CSX Corp.   announced second quarter 2021 net earnings of $1,173 million, or $0.52 per share, compared to $499 million, or $0.22 per share in the same period last year. Second quarter 2021 operating ratio was 43.4% compared to 63.3% in the prior year period.

Federal Funding Provides MTA with Financial Stability Through First Half of 2024; No Fare Increase in 2021

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced that Federal funding will provide the Authority with financial stability through the first half of 2024. The MTA is expected to receive $10.5 billion in Federal funding from December 2020’s Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) passed in March 2021. As a result, the Authority will not have to take immediate action on cost-cutting measures such as right-sizing of service and wage freezes. The MTA will also forgo a fare increase in 2021.

Rail Traffic for the Week Ending July 17, 2021

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending July 17, 2021.  For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 513,255 carloads and intermodal units, up 6.6 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending July 17 were 235,303 carloads, up 9.7 percent compared with the same week in 2020, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 277,952 containers and trailers, up 4.1 percent compared to 2020.

Metro-North Railroad Announces Resumption of Ferry Service

MTA Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi today announced the Haverstraw-Ossining and Newburgh-Beacon ferry services will resume on Monday, August 30. The changes will coincide with Metro-North’s upcoming service increase, to take effect with the August 29 timetables, which will increase train service to 83% of pre-pandemic levels.
