Interborough Express Connecting Queens and Brooklyn Moves Forward
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today released a Request for Proposals (RFP) to solicit consultant bids to begin the preliminary engineering phase of the Interborough Express (IBX), which is expected to take approximately two years. This represents a major step in the design of the transformative transit project which will connect communities in Brooklyn and Queens to 17 subway lines, 51 current bus routes, the Long Island Rail Road at the East New York Station, as well as significantly reduce travel times within and between the two boroughs.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces $2.4 Billion in New Rail Projects to Improve Safety, Strengthen Supply Chains and Grow America’s Freight and Passenger Rail Networks
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) today announced more than $2.4 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for 122 rail improvement projects in 41 states and Washington, D.C. These projects will make rail safer, more reliable, and more resilient, getting goods and people where they need to be quickly with fewer disruptions, lower shipping costs and less pollution.

Amtrak Advances Major Power System Upgrades Along Critical Segment of the Harrisburg Line
Amtrak has awarded the first of three crucial construction contracts for the Zoo to Paoli Electrification Transmission Line Program. HNTB was selected for project and construction management support for the substation at Bryn Mawr and the Bryn Mawr to Paoli segment of the overall project.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber Appoints Demetrius Crichlow as the 12th President of New York City Transit
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chair and CEO Janno Lieber has named three officials to senior strategic roles, including Demetrius Crichlow as the 12th permanent president of New York City Transit. Crichlow takes the role after serving over four months in interim capacity and after a decades long career at the MTA. As president, Crichlow will oversee the 50,000-person workforce, including operations for New York City subways, buses, paratransit services, and the Staten Island Railway.

Train Service on the Metro-North Waterbury Branch Line Resumes Monday, October 28
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) alerts riders that train service on the Metro-North (MNR) Waterbury Branch Line resumes on Monday, October 28 with the 4:45 a.m. train from Waterbury and the 7 a.m. train from Bridgeport.

AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending October 19, 2024
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending October 19, 2024. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 510,730 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.1 percent compared with the same week last year.

STB Approves Transaction That Creates New CPKC-CSX Class I Connection Linking Mexico, Texas and the U.S. Southeast
Canadian Pacific Kansas City (TSX: CP) (CPKC), CSX Corporation (CSX) and Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) today said the Surface Transportation Board (STB) has approved CSX’s and CPKC’s respective applications regarding their acquisition of the rail lines operated by G&W’s Meridian & Bigbee Railroad, L.L.C. (MNBR), which will result in the creation of a new direct CPKC-CSX interchange connection in Alabama.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending October 12, 2024. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 505,033 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.6 percent compared with the same week last year.

SEPTA Announces September Ridership
SEPTA has announced system-wide ridership in September 2024 was 74% of pre-COVID September 2019 ridership. August 2024 still holds the record for highest recovery rate.
