CSX Advances Hydrogen Locomotive Development at Huntington

CSX is driving innovation in locomotive technology at its Huntington Locomotive Shop, where craft-led teams are transitioning diesel engines to hydrogen-powered alternatives. The program, aimed at advancing sustainable solutions for rail transportation, has completed three hydrogen units, with a fourth expected to be finished in 2025.

The Huntington team, which brings over a century of experience to locomotive construction and maintenance, is repurposing essential components such as cabs, frames, and traction motors. The reused parts extend the lifespan of the locomotives while supporting CSX’s commitment to sustainability.

CSX unveiled its first hydrogen locomotive in 2024 as part of a collaboration with Kansas-based rail company CPKC. Hydrogen technology offers a cleaner alternative to diesel, emitting only water vapor and providing greater energy efficiency.

Project Coordinator Daniel Adkins praised the team’s contributions to the hydrogen initiative. “The team that we have here at Huntington, in my opinion, there’s no other place like this,” Adkins said. “From electricians to boilermakers to pipefitters, we have employees that, through the collective experience, can do anything. If you can dream it, we can build it.”

The Huntington Locomotive Shop is at the forefront of CSX’s efforts to push boundaries in rail technology while achieving its environmental goals.
