MTA Announces Partnership with Zabar’s to Celebrate 120 Years of the Subway
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) \announced a partnership with New York institution Zabar’s in honor of the New York City subway’s 120th anniversary and Zabar’s 90th anniversary, the legendary gourmet market located on West 80 St. on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Zabar’s will offer promotional “commuter special” bagel deals beginning Thursday, Oct. 24, through Sunday, Oct. 27, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

NJ Transit Announces Special Rail Service for Far Hills Race Meeting
NJ TRANSIT is offering special rail service between Hoboken and Far Hills to transport customers to and from the 103rd running of the Far Hills Race Meeting on Saturday, October 19. NJ TRANSIT’s Far Hills Station on the Gladstone Branch of the Morris & Essex Lines is located directly across the street from Moorland Farms, the site of the event.

Amtrak Harrisburg Line Track Renewal Work Advances Ahead of Schedule
Amtrak’s Harrisburg Line Track Renewal Project in Pennsylvania is progressing ahead of schedule, with the last day of replacement bus service now planned for Nov. 7, two weeks earlier than originally promised.

Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending October 5, 2024
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending October 5, 2024. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 486,187 carloads and intermodal units, down 2.5 percent compared with the same week last year.

The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has acquired New York Central 4-8-2 “Mohawk” steam locomotive 3001 from the National New York Central Railroad Museum at Elkhart, Indiana.

First R211S Subway Cars Launched into Service on Staten Island Railway
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) launched new R211S subway cars into service on the Staten Island Railway on October 9, 2024. The cars are part of a 535-car order which includes 440 R211A standard cars with state-of-the-art amenities, 75 Staten Island Railway cars and 20 cars with the open gangway feature.

Metro Finishes Installing More-Secure Faregates
All 98 stations across the Metrorail system now have more secure, retrofitted faregates to deter fare evasion. The improvements have led to an 82% drop in fare evasion in the Metrorail system.

Amtrak and Partners Break Ground on New Philadelphia Train Maintenance Facility
Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner was joined on October 4th by Federal Railroad Administrator Amit Bose, White House Deputy Assistant to the President for Infrastructure Implementation Samantha Silverberg and Rail Passengers Association President & CEO Jim Mathews to celebrate the start of construction for Amtrak’s new heavy maintenance facility at Penn Coach Yard in Philadelphia.
