Amtrak Restores Traditional Dining On Western Long Distance Routes

Amtrak announced today the restoration of traditional dining service beginning Wednesday, June 23 on the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, Sunset Limited, and Texas Eagle (for service between San Antonio and Los Angeles). Travelers will experience a redesigned menu featuring chef-prepared meals for breakfast, lunch and a three-course dinner.

Rail Traffic for May and the Week Ending May 29, 2021

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending May 29, 2021, as well as volumes for May 2021.  U.S. railroads originated 964,356 carloads in May 2021, up 30.4 percent, or 224,623 carloads, from May 2020. U.S. railroads also originated 1,151,824 containers and trailers in May 2021, up 26.2 percent, or 238,927 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in May 2021 were 2,116,180, up 28 percent, or 463,550 carloads and intermodal units from May 2020.

Final Environmental Impact Statement Released on the Hudson Tunnel Project

The Gateway Development Commission hailed the long-awaited release today of the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Record of Decision (ROD) on the Hudson Tunnel Project. Completion of the FEIS and issuance of a ROD by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is a major milestone for the project. With a Record of Decision in hand, real estate property acquisition, advanced engineering design, utility relocation and other pre-construction activities can move forward, bringing the project a significant step closer to major construction.

New York Governor Cuomo Announces Completion of Major Construction of East Side Access

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo  announced the completion of civil construction on East Side Access – the MTA’s megaproject connecting the Long Island Rail Road to a new 350,000-square-foot passenger terminal under Grand Central Terminal. This is the largest new train terminal to be built in the United States since the 1950s and the first expansion of the LIRR in more than 100 years. The new connection will double the LIRR’s capacity into Manhattan with up to 24 trains per hour and cut travel time for Queens commuters by 40 minutes per day.

Surface Transportation Board Rules on Completeness of CSX’s Merger Application to Acquire Pan Am, Permits Filing of Revised Application

The Surface Transportation Board today announced a decision finding the merger application filed by CSX Transportation, Inc. to acquire control of Pan Am Systems, Inc. and its short line railroad subsidiaries to be incomplete. The Board found that the application did not include all of the information necessary for purposes of a “significant” transaction under the Board’s regulations
