MBTA Commuter Rail Announces Fall/Winter Schedule to Take Effect October 17
The MBTA and Keolis Commuter Services (Keolis), the agency’s operating partner for Commuter Rail, today announced the new Fall/Winter schedule which will take effect on October 17. All schedules will be available online at mbta.com/cr as of Monday, October 3.

Governor Murphy Announces Groundbreaking of Hoboken Connect Project
Governor Phil Murphy yesterday commemorated the groundbreaking of a major new development and public infrastructure improvement project near Hoboken’s historic train station. The long-stalled redevelopment effort, now called Hoboken Connect, will produce new office and retail space, affordable housing, and improvements to public infrastructure and the surrounding streetscape. The project, which had been in development for 15 years, was jump-started by the Murphy Administration through cooperation among various partners, including NJ TRANSIT, LCOR, and the City of Hoboken.

$11 Million Department of Labor Grant to Fund Amtrak and DelDOT Railroad Worker Training Program
In partnership with Amtrak, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), is being awarded $11 million to fund a new “Railroading 101” program. The training course is funded by a U.S. Department of Labor grant.

Rail Traffic for September and the Week Ending October 1, 2022
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending October 1, 2022, as well as volumes for September 2022. U.S. railroads originated 928,590 carloads in September 2022, down 1.1 percent, or 10,639 carloads, from September 2021. U.S. railroads also originated 1,011,304 containers and trailers in September 2022, down 4.8 percent, or 51,039 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in September 2022 were 1,939,894, down 3.1 percent, or 61,678 carloads and intermodal units from September 2021.

SEPTA Releases Comprehensive Safety and Security Plan
SEPTA released a comprehensive plan, “Leading the Way: SEPTA’s Response to Safety and Security”, detailing its ongoing strategy for addressing safety, security and the challenges of the vulnerable population on its system. This population, which includes individuals experiencing homelessness, substance abuse and mental health issues, has increased in recent years, prompting the Authority to create its nationally recognized SCOPE program in 2021.

New York Governor Hochul Celebrates Completion of LIRR Main Line Third Track On Time and Under Budget
Governor Kathy Hochul yesterday celebrated completion of the Long Island Rail Road’s historic Third Track project on time and under budget. The new 9.8-mile track runs from Floral Park to Hicksville, giving the railroad more operational flexibility to minimize service disruptions and increase service by 41 percent systemwide when Grand Central Madison opens later this year, while improving safety and creating true bi-directional LIRR service to fuel the local economy.

CSX Corporation announced it will contribute $200,000 to support relief and recovery efforts underway in the Florida and South Carolina communities affected by Hurricane Ian.

Improvements at MBTA Red Line Codman Yard Beginning by End of Year
As part of the MBTA’s Capital Programs, the Capital Transformation team will hold a virtual pre-construction public meeting on Thursday, October 13, at 6 PM to discuss work to be completed at Codman Yard. The Codman Yard Expansion and Improvements project includes replacing existing tracks and adding six new storage tracks within the existing yard to hold 36 additional Red Line vehicles, increasing yard capacity by over 50%.

Norfolk Southern Creates Transportation and Network Operations Organization
Norfolk Southern Corporation has created a combined Transportation and Network Operations organization led by Paul B. Duncan. Duncan has been promoted to Senior Vice President Transportation and Network Operations and will lead the team responsible for designing network operations, executing network plans, and coordinating the movement of trains across the company’s rail network.

LIRR Announces Six Express Trains Included in Port Washington Branch Revised Grand Central Madison Draft Timetables
MTA Long Island Rail Road Interim President Catherine Rinaldi today was joined by Senator Anna M. Kaplan and Assemblymember Gina L. Sillitti to announce that the LIRR has released revised draft timetables for the Port Washington Branch.
