Customers Invest $3.2B along Norfolk Southern’s Network in 2022
Norfolk Southern Corporation partnered with 120 companies to facilitate 159 industrial development projects in 2022. The projects expanded operations or created new facilities along the company’s rail network. Collectively, they represent $3.2 billion in investment and the creation of more than 3,940 new jobs.

MTA Unveils Major Accessibility and Circulation Improvements at 34 St-Penn Station
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) unveiled a set of major station and accessibility improvements at Penn Station, part of its long-running effort to create a more accessible and comfortable station experience for the hundreds of thousands of daily Penn Station customers. The project’s new, fully accessible street entrance and fare control area at 7 Av and 33 St increases accessibility and reliability for all subway customers.

Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services Inc. to Address Clean Air Act Violations in Settlement with United States
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Justice announced a settlement with Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services Inc. and numerous affiliated companies (collectively, GWRSI) for violation of Clean Air Act (CAA) locomotive regulations. The complaint, also filed today, alleges that GWRSI’s locomotives with rebuilt engines failed to meet applicable EPA emission standards, and that GWRSI did not perform required emissions-related maintenance or keep records of maintenance performed.

CSX Corp. Announces Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2022 Results
CSX Corp. announced fourth quarter 2022 operating income of $1.46 billion compared to $1.37 billion in fourth quarter 2021. Net earnings of $1.02 billion, or $0.49 per share, compared to $934 million, or $0.42 per share, in the same period last year.

New York Governor Hochul Rides Inaugural LIRR Train To Grand Central Madison
New York Governor Kathy Hochul and MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber yesterday rode the inaugural Long Island Rail Road train to Grand Central Madison, which arrived at the terminal platform at 11:07 a.m. The train was the first of Grand Central Direct trains now operating between Jamaica and Grand Central Madison between 6:15 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on weekends. Trains are running every 30 minutes in both directions during weekday midday periods as well as on weekends, and once per hour during peak periods – arriving in Grand Central between 6:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and departing between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Upcoming Service Changes on MBTA’s Orange, Green, Red, Haverhill Commuter Rail Lines in February
The MBTA today announced upcoming service changes next month on the Orange, Green, and Red lines as well as the Haverhill Commuter Rail Line. Because of the continued demolition of the Government Center Garage by private developer HYM Construction, Orange and Green line service changes will take place in February in the downtown Boston area

Rail Traffic for the Week Ending January 21, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending January 21, 2023. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 467,485 carloads and intermodal units, down 2.1 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending January 21 were 230,545 carloads, up 3.3 percent compared with the same week in 2022, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 236,940 containers and trailers, down 6.7 percent compared to 2022.

MTA Announces Long Island Rail Road Service to Grand Central Madison to Begin Wednesday, Jan. 25
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced Long Island Rail Road service to Grand Central Madison will begin Wednesday, Jan. 25. The first train is scheduled to originate at Jamaica at 10:45 a.m. and run express to Grand Central Madison where it is scheduled to arrive at 11:07 a.m. For at least three weeks, LIRR will operate limited shuttle service between Jamaica and Grand Central Madison so customers can acquaint themselves with the new terminal as existing schedules continue.
