MBTA Announces Safety First Program for South Coast Rail
South Coast Rail (SCR) Phase 1 service between Boston and Southeastern Massachusetts will soon become a reality with MBTA Commuter Rail trains beginning service to and from Middleborough, East Taunton, Freetown, Fall River, and New Bedford for the first time in decades. With safety as the T’s first priority and in preparation for the return of passenger service to these areas, the MBTA is kicking off a Safety First education program for SCR communities.

Phillip Eng appointed as MBTA General Manager
Governor Maura T. Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kimberley Driscoll and Transportation Secretary Gina Fiandaca today announced that, after a comprehensive search, they will be appointing Phillip Eng as the next General Manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Eng is an engineer with nearly 40 years of experience in transportation, including as President of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) Long Island Rail Road and Interim President of New York City Transit.

Port Authority Advances with Plans for Newark Airport AirTrain Replacement
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced it has selected three automated-people-mover (APM) system technology firms to advance to the next phase of a multi-phase procurement process to replace the existing AirTrain Newark system at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) with a new 2.5-mile automated train system.

Amtrak Study Examines Scranton – New York Corridor
Amtrak and the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority (PNRRA) have released the findings of a two-year analysis examining the potential for rail service between Scranton and New York. The study included operations planning to develop a sample schedule, ridership estimates, economic impacts and an infrastructure assessment for the Pennsylvania segment. The infrastructure assessment estimates costs to upgrade track to accommodate passenger trains along 60 route miles owned by PNRRA between Scranton and the Delaware Water Gap.

Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending March 18, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending March 18, 2023. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 453,500 carloads and intermodal units, down 9.4 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending March 18 were 227,454 carloads, down 2.7 percent compared with the same week in 2022, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 226,046 containers and trailers, down 15.2 percent compared to 2022.

Yankee Clipper Trains Return
Metro-North’s schedule update includes the return of game-day service to Yankee Stadium. The New York Yankees open their season at home against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday, March 30, at 1:05 p.m. For Opening Day, Metro-North will operate shuttle trains between Grand Central Terminal (GCT), Harlem/125th Street station and Yankees/E 153rd Street stations and will also make a stop at the stadium on several additional Hudson Line trains.

Metro-North Railroad Announces Schedule Adjustments to Support State of Good Repair Projects
MTA Metro-North Railroad today announced upcoming schedule adjustments on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines to support state of good repair work. The new schedule will go into effect on Sunday, March 26, and be in effect through Saturday, June 10. The minor adjustments on the schedule will support ongoing infrastructure improvements happening on all three of the railroad’s East of Hudson lines.

Amtrak Announces Restoration of the Adirondack
Amtrak, in conjunction with VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail), New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and other federal agencies, today announced the resumption of train service between New York City and Montreal via the Adirondack train beginning Monday, April 3.
