Portal North Bridge Project Update
The Portal North Bridge, a key Phase I project in the Gateway Program, will create a modern, high-level, fixed-span structure to replace the century-old Portal Bridge – a moveable swing-span that creates a major bottleneck along the NEC. The completed Portal North Bridge will remove conflicts with maritime traffic, improve reliability for Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT passengers, allow for increased train speeds and provide for expanded capacity along the NEC.

AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending August 5, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending August 5, 2023. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 471,938 carloads and intermodal units, down 3.2 percent compared with the same week last year.

MTA Announces New LIRR Far Rockaway Ticket Available Starting Aug. 20
With CityTicket, the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) discounted ticket for travel within Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan, set to expand during the week of Aug. 20 to peak hour trains for the first time since it was created 20 years ago, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that the LIRR will simultaneously launch its new Far Rockaway Ticket, which will have similar characteristics as CityTicket and will be available for purchase at Far Rockaway Station.

Texas Central and Amtrak Seek to Explore High-Speed Rail Service Opportunities between Dallas and Houston
Texas Central Partners (“Texas Central”) and Amtrak are seeking opportunities to advance planning and analysis work associated with the proposed Dallas-Houston 205-mph high-speed rail project to further determine its viability. Amtrak has cooperated with Texas Central on various initiatives since 2016 and the two entities are currently evaluating a potential partnership to further study and potentially advance the project.
