Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending January 6, 2024
he Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending January 6, 2024. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 417,257 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.3 percent compared with the same week last year.

Customers invest $3.1B along Norfolk Southern’s network in 2023
Norfolk Southern Corporation partnered with 62 customers to complete strategic industrial development projects in 2023. The projects expanded operations or created new facilities along Norfolk Southern’s rail network. Collectively, the projects represent $3.1 billion in investment and the creation of more than 4,150 new jobs.

New York City Subway Crash
On January 4th Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) leadership responded to the scene of subway derailment at 96 St 1/2/3/ Lines Station involving a 1 Line train carrying approximately 300 customers and another 1 Line train that had been taken out of service due to vandalism with no customers on board.

Weekly Rail Traffic for December and the Week Ending December 30, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending December 30, 2023, as well as volumes for December 2023. U.S. railroads originated 876,881 carloads in December 2023, up 7.3 percent, or 59,804 carloads, from December 2022. U.S. railroads also originated 982,383 containers and trailers in December 2023, up 10.2 percent, or 90,881 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in December 2023 were 1,859,264, up 8.8 percent, or 150,685 carloads and intermodal units from December 2022.
