AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending February 8, 2025
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending February 8, 2025. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 502,449 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.7 percent compared with the same week last year.

Superior Court Affirms Public Service Commission Ruling on Hanson Spur
Last week the Fulton County Superior Court upheld prior decisions by a Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) Hearing Officer and the full PSC to grant Sandersville Railroad Company’s petition to acquire small strips of real estate by eminent domain that the railroad needs to construct the Hanson Spur in Hancock County.

MBTA Announces South Coast Rail Service Begins March 24, 2025
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has shared the South Coast Rail passenger service start date. Pending final approval from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), passenger service will begin Monday, March 24, 2025. For the first time in 65 years, the communities of Taunton, Freetown, New Bedford, Middleboro, and Fall River will have passenger rail service

MTA Announces Justin Vonashek Appointed Seventh President of MTA Metro-North Railroad
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chair and CEO Janno Lieber announced the appointment of Justin Vonashek to serve as President of MTA Metro-North Railroad. Vonashek will succeed Catherine Rinaldi, the first woman to lead the railroad, who is retiring after nearly seven years in the role.

CSX Begins Reconstruction of Historic Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore
The historic Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore, originally opened in the late 1800s, has officially closed for reconstruction as part of an initiative to modernize the nearly 8,700-foot-long tunnel and enable double-stack intermodal service along CSX’s I-95 Rail Corridor.

IAL Receives Major Photographic Collection of World-Renowned Railroad Photographer, Michael A. Eagleson
The Industrial Archives & Library (IAL) proudly announces receipt by donation of the photographic and film work of world-renowned railroad photographer and author, the late Michael A. Eagleson. Eagleson’s unique collection spans more than 60 years, and is noteworthy in that it helps document the fading of the steam locomotive from the American railroad scene, and eventually that same gradual surrender to more modern locomotive technologies around the world.
