Governor Hochul Announces Metro-North to Operate First-In-the-Nation Battery-and Electric-Powered Locomotives for Penn Station Access
New York Governor Kathy Hochul today announced details of a major expansion of Metro-North Railroad’s railcar fleet, unveiling plans to add new trains that will provide New Haven Line service to Penn Station and four additional stations in the Bronx.

Amtrak Extends for Two Additional Months Current Empire Service Levels Between Albany and New York City
Amtrak today announced the extension of the expanded temporary Empire Service through Sunday, April 27. On Monday, April 28, the new spring schedule will take effect to allow Amtrak to rehabilitate the vital East River Tunnel in New York City, which was damaged in Superstorm Sandy.

AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending February 15, 2025
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending February 15, 2025. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 480,740 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.5 percent compared with the same week last year.

Canada Announces Alto High Speed Rail Project
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that Canada is developing a high-speed rail network in the Toronto-Quebec City corridor. This transformative rail network will span approximately 1,000 km and reach speeds of up to 300 km/hour, with stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City. Once operational, current travel times will be slashed in half – getting you from Montréal to Toronto in three hours. The official name of this high-speed rail service will be Alto.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit to Close Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel for Major Repairs
Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) will temporarily close the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel for approximately eight months, starting February 23, 2025, to perform critical infrastructure upgrades.

Shuttle Bus Substitution for Media-Sharon Hill Line
Bus service replaces all trolley service on the Media-Sharon Hill Line [D] between 69th Street Transit Center to Media and Sharon Hill stations beginning Saturday, February 15 through Sunday, March 2 due to a bridge rehabilitation project. Regular trolley service resumes start of service day Monday, March 3.

The East Broad Top Railroad Acquires Historic Diesel Locomotive
The East Broad Top Railroad is proud to announce the acquisition of a unique 1946 diesel locomotive from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, Colorado. Built by H.K. Porter Inc. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this 80-ton locomotive will provide crucial backup power for the EBT’s steam locomotives and support the EBT Foundation’s expansion efforts.
