Amtrak today announced the extension of the expanded temporary Empire Service through Sunday, April 27. On Monday, April 28, the new spring schedule will take effect to allow Amtrak to rehabilitate the vital East River Tunnel in New York City, which was damaged in Superstorm Sandy.

AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending February 15, 2025

 The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending February 15, 2025.  For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 480,740 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.5 percent compared with the same week last year.

Canada Announces Alto High Speed Rail Project

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that Canada is developing a high-speed rail network in the Toronto-Quebec City corridor. This transformative rail network will span approximately 1,000 km and reach speeds of up to 300 km/hour, with stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City. Once operational, current travel times will be slashed in half – getting you from Montréal to Toronto in three hours. The official name of this high-speed rail service will be Alto.

The East Broad Top Railroad Acquires Historic Diesel Locomotive

The East Broad Top Railroad is proud to announce the acquisition of a unique 1946 diesel locomotive from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, Colorado. Built by H.K. Porter Inc. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this 80-ton locomotive will provide crucial backup power for the EBT’s steam locomotives and support the EBT Foundation’s expansion efforts.
