Rail Traffic for the Week Ending December 5, 2020

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending December 5, 2020. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 542,203 carloads and intermodal units, up 4.8 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending December 5 were 244,986 carloads, down 1.4 percent compared with the same week in 2019, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 297,217 containers and trailers, up 10.5 percent compared to 2019.

$190 Million Project to Renovate Newark Penn Station

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy today announced a commitment of $190 million for renovations and upgrades at historic Newark Penn Station.

The Governor was joined at an event announcing the renovations by Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett, Senator Teresa Ruiz, Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin, and General Chairman of SMART-TD Local 60 Jerome Johnson.

MTA Announces Next Phase of Rutgers Tube Work

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials today announced forthcoming service changes for the next phase of the Rutgers Tube Rehabilitation Project. The work began in August and remains on track for completion in the spring.

Amtrak Completes Delaware Third Track Project

Amtrak, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) and the Delaware Transit Corporation (DTC) recently completed a $71.2 million project to increase capacity between Wilmington and Newark, Del. on the Northeast Corridor. This project, which represents a major infrastructure expansion project in the Northeast Corridor, included installation of 1.5 miles of a new, electrified main line third track between Ragan and Yard interlockings, bridge replacement, and other improvements, eliminating a previous two track bottleneck.

Canadian Pacific’s Proposed Logistic Park

Canadian Pacific Railway Limited is proposing to build a multi-modal, multi-commodity transload and logistics facility on strategic land holdings adjacent to its existing intermodal rail facility in Pitt Meadows, B.C. The proposed facility, named the CP Logistics Park: Vancouver, is in the early stages of design and is subject to regulatory approval prior to CP’s final investment decision.

North Jersey Coast Line Resumes Regular Operations

North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) rail service will resume regular operations beginning on Saturday, December 5th with the restoration of full weekend service.  Regular weekday schedules will resume on Monday, December 7th.  The resumption follows a modified schedule which was in effect as the result of a derailment last week in Perth Amboy.

NJ Transit And Rutgers University Selected For Grant To Study Improved Pedestrian Detection At Rail Crossings

Rutgers University in partnership with NJ TRANSIT has been selected for a grant award by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for its Safety Research and Demonstration Program. Rutgers University in cooperation with NJ TRANSIT received $357,000 to study pedestrian detection, one of ten grants awarded throughout the country.

Rail Traffic for November and the Week Ending November 28, 2020

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending November 28, 2020, as well as volumes for November 2020. U.S. railroads originated 900,194 carloads in November 2020, down 5.8 percent, or 55,198 carloads, from November 2019. U.S. railroads also originated 1,136,695 containers and trailers in November 2020, up 11.5 percent, or 116,915 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in November 2020 were 2,036,889, up 3.1 percent, or 61,717 carloads and intermodal units from November 2019.
