Rail Traffic for the Week Ending September 11, 2021
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending September 11, 2021. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 468,610 carloads and intermodal units, down 1.3 percent compared with the same week last year.

Kansas City Southern Terminates Canadian National Railway Merger Agreement and Is Entering Into Merger Agreement with Canadian Pacific Railway

Wabtec Signs Memoranda of Understanding with Carnegie Mellon University and Genesee & Wyoming to Decarbonize Freight Rail and Improve Freight Rail Safety
Wabtec announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Carnegie Mellon University, a top university in engineering, artificial intelligence, battery technology, autonomy and robotics, which formalizes their joint aim to create technologies that will decarbonize freight rail transport, improve freight safety, and generate greater rail network utilization.

CN announced that vaccination against COVID-19 will be mandatory for all its employees in Canada. CN’s vaccination policy will apply to all employees and new hires in Canada, and its wholly owned subsidiaries.

Rail Traffic for the Week Ending September 4, 2021
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending September 4, 2021. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 494,415 carloads and intermodal units, down 3 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending September 4 were 228,203 carloads, up 2.6 percent compared with the same week in 2020, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 266,212 containers and trailers, down 7.3 percent compared to 2020.

Kansas City Southern Board of Directors Determines Proposal from Canadian Pacific Railway Could Reasonably Be Expected to Lead to a “Superior Proposal”
Kansas City Southern (“KCS”) announced that its Board of Directors has unanimously determined, after consultation with the Company’s outside legal and financial advisors, that the unsolicited proposal received from Canadian Pacific Railway Limited on August 31, 2021, to acquire KCS in a cash and stock transaction valued by CP at $300 per KCS share could reasonably be expected to lead to a “Company Superior Proposal” as defined in KCS’s merger agreement with CN.
