Unions join together to thwart Norfolk Southern’s effort to eliminate train service crafts
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) and the Transportation Division of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART-TD) have joined forces to defeat efforts by Norfolk Southern Railway to supplant the train service crafts of conductors and brakemen by calling locomotive engineers to work their assignments.

Progress Rail and Norfolk Southern Collaborate on Tier 4 Locomotive
Progress Rail, a Caterpillar Company, and Norfolk Southern Corporation have collaborated on the first EMD GP34ECO locomotive built for yard and intermediate operations. The locomotive is currently undergoing testing to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 emissions certification requirements – the highest emission standard for locomotives.

Rail Traffic for the Week Ending September 25, 2021
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending September 25, 2021. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 511,713 carloads and intermodal units, down 1.3 percent compared with the same week last year.

MTA Announces Completion of Environmental Review for Metro-North Penn Station Access and Four New Stations in the Bronx
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced that the environmental review process for the Metro-North Penn Station Access Project is complete. The milestone makes four new stations in the Bronx as well as direct Metro-North service to Penn Station from the Bronx, Westchester, and Connecticut a step closer to reality.

Virginia Expands Train Service From Downtown Richmond
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced the launch of expanded rail service from Richmond to the Northeast Corridor. The Amtrak Northeast Regional Route 51 will now offer early morning service from Main Street Station, getting travelers from Downtown Richmond to Washington D.C., when the workday begins or to New York for a lunchtime meeting
