MTA Announces Catherine Rinaldi to Serve as Interim President of MTA Long Island Rail Road

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chair and CEO Janno Lieber  announced he has appointed Catherine Rinaldi to serve as Interim President of MTA Long Island Rail Road. Rinaldi will concurrently serve as President of Metro-North Railroad, a role she has held since 2018. Rinaldi will succeed Phillip Eng, who is retiring after nearly four years as LIRR President.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR)  reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending February 5, 2022.  For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 458,152 carloads and intermodal units, down 7.6 percent compared with the same week last year.

Amtrak Debuts New ALC-42 Locomotives

New Amtrak locomotives – made in the U.S. and cleaner, faster, and more fuel efficient than predecessors – began service today pulling the famous Amtrak Empire Builder train westbound from Chicago to Seattle. Locomotives 301 and 302 are among the first of 75 locomotives being delivered through 2024.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced $76.4 million in funding for 38 projects to renew and modernize New York’s freight rail infrastructure. Norfolk Southern Installs Efficient, Hybrid-Powered Cranes At Chicago and Atlanta Intermodal Terminal

Norfolk Southern Corporation has completed the installation of five additional new diesel-electric hybrid overhead gantry cranes at Chicago’s Lander’s and Atlanta’s Inman intermodal terminals. The fuel-efficient cranes further the company’s sustainability efforts by increasing fuel efficiency in terminal operations and reducing air emissions.

Rail Traffic for January and the Week Ending January 29, 2022

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending January 29, 2022, as well as volumes for January 2022.  U.S. railroads originated 902,265 carloads in January 2022, down 3 percent, or 27,861 carloads, from January 2021. U.S. railroads also originated 1,001,443 containers and trailers in January 2022, down 14.6 percent, or 171,796 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in January 2022 were 1,903,708, down 9.5 percent, or 199,657 carloads and intermodal units from January 2021.
