Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Allows PennDOT, Norfolk Southern to Move Toward Improved Freight and Passenger Rail Service in Western Pa.
Governor Tom Wolf and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Deputy Secretary for Multimodal Transportation Jennie Louwerse were joined by Federal Railroad Administration Administrator Amit Bose, Norfolk Southern (NS) Regional Vice President Rudy Husband and local officials to announce that the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) has paved the way for movement toward improved freight and passenger-rail service between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

Metro-North Railroad to Increase Weekday Service Starting March 27
Metro-North Railroad today announced new train schedules taking effect Sunday, March 27, that will restore 66 weekday trains on its three East of Hudson lines. The restoration of more weekday trains brings the railroad’s weekday service to 89% of its pre-pandemic levels.

Toronto’s Union Station Enhancement Project Begins
On February 16 work commenced on the renovation of the south end of Toronto Union Station’s trainshed. The first step is closing platforms 24 to 27 at Toronto’s main transit hub so work can start on the Union Station Enhancement Project (USEP).

CTDOT Releases Updated Five-Year Capital Plan
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) released an interim five-year Capital Plan, covering fiscal years 2022 – 2026 with a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emission, protecting natural and community resources, and improving the health and safety of residents. The interim five-year Plan includes capital investments in roadways and bridges, public transportation, and bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.

Norfolk Southern Offering Starting Bonuses Of Up To $5,000 For Conductor Trainees
Norfolk Southern Corporation announced that it is offering starting bonuses of up to $5,000 for conductor trainees in priority locations, and $2,500 for other locations.

New SEPTA Transit Schedules
SEPTA will adjust some bus and Market-Frankford Line schedules to reflect ridership trends, improve service reliability and prepare for more customers this spring. The changes are part of the annual Spring Transit Schedules that go into effect on Feb. 27-28.

Norfolk Southern Appoints Paul B. Duncan Vice President Network Planning and Operations
Norfolk Southern Corporation announced today that Paul B. Duncan has been appointed Vice President Network Planning and Operations. Duncan succeeds John Friedmann, who is retiring on March 1, 2022, after 27 years with Norfolk Southern. He will join the company in March, and report to Chief Operating Officer Cindy Sanborn.

Rail Traffic for the Week Ending February 12, 2022
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending February 12, 2022. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 504,482 carloads and intermodal units, up 5 percent compared with the same week last year.

VRE Fredericksburg Station Rehabilitation Project Progresses
Rehabilitation of the Virginia Railway Express’ (VRE) Fredericksburg station took a
step forward on January 21, 2022 when the commuter rail service’s Operations Board approved a task order for construction management services. Construction on the $5 million project is expected to begin this summer, following the selection of a construction contractor.
