Norfolk Southern Corporation today announced third quarter 2022 financial results which included records for railway operating revenues, income from railway operations, net income, and diluted earnings per share. Third quarter railway operating revenue was $3.3 billion, income from railway operations was $1.3 billion, net income was $958 million, and diluted earnings per share were $4.10.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the return of New York City’s longest-running indoor holiday fair to Grand Central after a two-year pause. Rail Traffic for the Week Ending October 15, 2022

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending October 15, 2022. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 500,304 carloads and intermodal units, up 0.7 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending October 15 were 237,263 carloads, up 3.2 percent compared with the same week in 2021, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 263,041 containers and trailers, down 1.6 percent compared to 2021.

Silver Line Extension Operationally Ready to Open for Passengers by Thanksgiving

After successfully completing two weeks of simulated service, Metro leaders said today that they will be able to open the extension to Dulles Airport Station in time for the start of busy Thanksgiving travel, subject to approvals this week from the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission (WMSC) of two submissions — a data-driven Return to Service Plan for 7000-series railcars, and a safety certification report of the Silver Line extension.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces $600 Million from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to Replace Aging Railcars Across the Nation

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced it will provide $600 million this year from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to replace aging railcars, improving reliability, safety, and accessibility on the nation’s rail transit systems. Eligible transit agencies and states can apply through the Notice of Funding Opportunity for the FY 2022 and FY 2023 Rail Vehicle Replacement Program for funds to replace vehicles on subway systems, commuter rail and light rail systems.
