Automatic Train Operation (ATO) is coming to Washington Metro’s Green and Yellow lines on Friday, May 23 after rigorous internal training and testing and concurrence from the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission.
ATO is not used during inclement weather, single tracking, and when workers are on the tracks.
ATO improves the experience for customers and train operators alike. Metro began operations on the Red Line last December, reducing travel time on end-to-end Red Line trips by 8 minutes. Since implementation, there have been no safety issues or red signal violations for trains operating in ATO.
