Biden-Harris Administration Recommends Advancing Eighteen Major Transit Projects
Eighteen large transit projects in 11 states across the nation were recommended to receive $4.45 billion for construction by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. These large rail and bus rapid transit (BRT) projects were recommended to receive federal support in President Biden’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Budget Request to Congress.

USDOT’s Federal Railroad Administration Announces a Supplemental Safety Assessment of Norfolk Southern Railway’s Operations
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) announced its plan to conduct a 60-day supplemental safety assessment of Norfolk Southern Railway following multiple safety incidents. This in-depth assessment of Norfolk Southern is in addition to a number of actions taken by the U.S. Department of Transportation over the past several weeks to improve freight rail safety and accountability to protect workers and communities.

CSX Sandstone, West Virginia Incident Update
n close collaboration with responding agencies, CSX has safely removed all 22 of the empty coal cars that derailed in yesterday’s incident in Sandstone, W. Va. CSX is in the process of removing the four locomotives. This process should be completed later this morning. CSX teams have deployed additional environmental measures in order to contain any additional fuel that may leak as the final locomotive is removed.

Amtrak Begins B&P Tunnel Replacement Program Work
Amtrak is ready to begin early construction activities as part of the B&P Tunnel Replacement Program. The first project is set to kick off on Friday, March 10, in the Halethorpe and West Baltimore areas. The work includes replacing aging wooden ties with new concrete ties, installing new rail and completing track drainage improvements.

AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending March 4, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending March 4, 2023. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 474,191 carloads and intermodal units, down 6.3 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending March 4 were 237,413 carloads, down 1.0 percent compared with the same week in 2022, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 236,778 containers and trailers, down 11.1 percent compared to 2022.

NY Penn Station Access Infrastructure Project
Amtrak is coordinating with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to support the Penn Station Access Project on the Hell Gate Line. This project will transform the region by constructing four new Metro-North stations in the Bronx and allowing Metro-North trains to travel to New York Penn Station for the first time.

US Senator Warren Urges Surface Transportation Board to Block Proposed Railroad Merger Citing Threats to Safety and Jobs
U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) sent a letter to the Surface Transportation Board (STB), urging them to block the proposed merger between Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS), which would combine the sixth- and seventh-largest U.S. railroads by revenue. The Senator sent the letter following the derailment and massive chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio and highlighted the risks from years of cost-cutting and deregulation of the nations’ railways.

CSX Responds to Derailment in Sandstone, West Virginia
At 4:51 a.m., a CSX train struck a rockslide in Sandstone, W. Va., causing the empty coal train to derail. Preliminary information indicates that all four of the train’s locomotives and nine empty coal cars derailed.
