Biden-Harris Administration Announces Nearly $631 Million in Grants to Help Transit Agencies Buy New Railcars
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced $631 million in grants to improve rail transit safety and reliability for passengers through the purchase of new American-made rail cars. This investment, a part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, will improve transportation systems across the nation while creating good-paying jobs and boosting economic competitiveness.

Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending February 17, 2024
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending February 17, 2024. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 474,226 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.7 percent compared with the same week last year.

Maryland Transit Administration Awarded $213 Million Federal Grant to Replace Entire Light Rail Vehicle Fleet
The Maryland Transit Administration has been awarded $213,696,341 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration’s Rail Vehicle Replacement program. The grant will support the Maryland Transit Administration’s efforts to replace all 52 aging Light Rail vehicles in its fleet with new, modern railcars.

$317.1 Million Secured to Replace 200 Rail Cars on SEPTA’s Market-Frankford Line
This past Friday (Feb. 16) , U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and John Fetterman (D-PA), U.S. Representatives Brendan Boyle (D-PA-2), Dwight Evans (D-PA-3), and Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA-5), and Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker announced that SEPTA is receiving $317,160,000 in infrastructure funding to purchase approximately 200 new rail cars on the Market-Frankford Line, SEPTA’s most heavily-used commuter rail line.

Norfolk Southern, BLET, SMART-TD, and FRA Sign Landmark C3RS Safety Agreement
Norfolk Southern Corporation, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), and the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers – Transportation Division (SMART-TD), along with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), signed an agreement Thursday to participate in the FRA’s Confidential Close Call Reporting System (C3RS).
