First R211S Subway Cars Launched into Service on Staten Island Railway

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) launched new R211S subway cars into service on the Staten Island Railway on October 9, 2024. The cars are part of a 535-car order which includes 440 R211A standard cars with state-of-the-art amenities, 75 Staten Island Railway cars and 20 cars with the open gangway feature.

Amtrak, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), and NJ TRANSIT released the engineering feasibility study, “Doubling Trans-Hudson Train Capacity at New York Penn Station” (NYP), that analyzes the potential of four concepts to double train capacity at the station during the peak period, as well as expand Amtrak Empire Service, without expanding the current station’s footprint.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) today issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity announcing the availability of more than $1 billion in funding to expand and modernize intercity passenger rail nationwide through the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program for projects not located on the Northeast Corridor (Fed- State National Program).
