U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao Makes Historic Announcement on America’s Freight System
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao today announced the release of the first-ever National Freight Strategic Plan (NFSP). It is the latest effort by the Department and the Trump Administration to strengthen America’s economic competitiveness. The NFSP lays out a vision for long-term investments in infrastructure, the workforce, and other essential parts of the freight system.

NJ TRANSIT is keeping up with the times by taking its Safety Education Program virtual. Schools are encouraged to request the free SAFETY RULES! presentation, now conducted over Zoom, to educate students on the need for safe behavior and caution around trains and light rail vehicles.

Amtrak Expands Carry-on Bike Program on Northeast Regional and Northeast State Supported Trains
Amtrak has expanded its Carry-on bike program for most Northeast Regional departures, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, allowing passengers to store their bike inside of the passenger coach in a designated space. In addition, Amtrak has worked with its various Northeast state partners to offer the program on its State-Supported trains.

Rail Traffic for August and the Week Ending August 29, 2020
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending August 29, 2020, as well as volumes for August 2020. U.S. railroads originated 898,227 carloads in August 2020, down 14.9 percent, or 156,797 carloads, from August 2019. U.S. railroads also originated 1,122,954 containers and trailers in August 2020, up 3 percent, or 33,115 units, from the same month last year

Amtrak Partners with RB, The Makers of Lysol®, To Further Strengthen Hygiene Protocols
Amtrak is building on its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of travelers by announcing a partnership with RB, the makers of Lysol. As part of this new partnership, germ-kill experts and microbiologists from RB will help Amtrak strengthen its comprehensive disinfection protocols for Amtrak trains, stations and Metropolitan Lounges. The partnership will launch in stations served by the Northeast Corridor and Pacific Surfliner trains, before expanding across the Amtrak network.

Norfolk Southern’s Living Shoreline Initiative Is Good For The Environment, The Community, And Business
Oysters, river otters, shore birds, and other wildlife have a new place to call home along an industrial stretch of the Elizabeth River that Norfolk Southern has reclaimed as a living shoreline.
The innovative sustainability project, completed recently, has transformed a stretch of severely eroded shoreline at the railroad’s Lamberts Point terminal into a green oasis in an area where ship repair and port businesses operate. The initiative advances significant environmental, community, and business goals.

Canadian National Orders Electric Trucks For Use At Intermodal Terminals
CN and The Lion Electric Co. announced today that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for CN to acquire 50 zero-emission trucks by CN as part of its fleet of trucks for intermodal use.

MTA Completes Major Upgrades at 42nd St.–Grand Central – Busiest Subway Entrance in New York City
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the completion of major upgrades at 42nd St.–Grand Central – the busiest subway station entrance in New York City. The project included a total replacement of two escalators, an adjacent stairway and a newly replaced elevator leading to the subway station. These upgrades are part of the larger 42 St Connection Project, which will modernize key elements of the Times Square, Grand Central, and stations in between the 42 St corridor.
