Facing Worst Financial Crisis in its History, MTA Outlines Proposed 2021 Budget and Four-Year Financial Plan
On November 18 The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) released its proposed 2021 budget and four-year financial plan amidst the worst financial crisis in agency history. The plan includes devastating service cuts, a drastic reduction in the agency’s workforce and a continued pause on the historic $51.5 billion Capital Plan in the absence of $12 billion in federal aid. The MTA continues to face an unprecedented financial crisis – eclipsing the Great Depression’s impact on transit revenue and ridership.

Amtrak, Town of Brattleboro, State of Vermont and VTRANS Announce Feasibility Study for New Brattleboro Station
Amtrak today announced it is in discussions with the Town of Brattleboro, NECR Railroad and the State of Vermont on its proposal for a new, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant Brattleboro Station, including a new station building, platform and track changes.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending November 14, 2020. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 527,462 carloads and intermodal units, up 5.2 percent compared with the same week last year

Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad Near Completion of Positive Train Control Rail Safety Enhancement System
The Presidents of the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad today announced that roll-out of Positive Train Control (PTC) is nearly completed at both railroads and is expected to be complete on time by the end of the year, despite the unprecedented and catastrophic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the finances of the railroads’ parent organization, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

MTA Brings Port Authority, NJ TRANSIT, Amtrak and SEPTA on Board with Regional Mask Force
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced a partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), NJ TRANSIT, Amtrak and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) to create a regional ‘Mask Force’ to encourage universal mask compliance on public transit.

MTA Unveils New Capacity Tracking and Real-Time Location Features in Metro-North TrainTime App
MTA Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi today unveiled major new features to the Metro-North TrainTime app, including one that lets customers track in real time the amount of space available on each car of an approaching train. The feature is designed to help customers keep appropriate social distance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Riders can also easily track the location of trains before and after arriving at their origin station right within the app.

LIRR to Make Track, Signal and Switch Improvements Near Hicksville Weekends of Nov. 14-15 & 21-22
On the weekends of Nov. 14-15 and Nov. 21-22. Long Island Rail Road crews working near the Hicksville Station will upgrade switches and install and test new signals, and install longer-lasting concrete ties. The changes will improve reliability along the corridor and provide the capacity needed in preparation for the new third track between Hicksville and Floral Park, and will require service adjustments.
