VIA Rail’s 2021 Public Meeting

VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) invites the public to watch its 2021 Annual Public Meeting (APM) to be aired on May 27, 2021, at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (ET). As part of the APM, VIA Rail will report to Canadians on its performance, financial results and projects for 2020, an unprecedented year for the Corporation due to the consecutive crises it faced.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Announces $1.69 Billion for Amtrak in Response to COVID-19

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced that the Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is making more than $1.69 billion available to the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) to provide relief from the impacts of COVID-19 to the company’s business operations, workforce, and state funding partners. The funding is provided under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Rail Traffic for the Week Ending April 24, 2021

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending April 24, 2021. .For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 538,184 carloads and intermodal units, up 30 percent compared with the same week last year.  Total carloads for the week ending April 24 were 240,075 carloads, up 25 percent compared with the same week in 2020, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 298,109 containers and trailers, up 34.3 percent compared to 2020.

Norfolk Southern Reports First-Quarter 2021 Results

Norfolk Southern Corporation  today reported first-quarter 2021 financial results. First-quarter net income was $673 million, diluted earnings per share was a first-quarter record of $2.66, and the operating ratio improved to an all-time quarterly record of 61.5%.

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) announced its subsidiary Savannah Port Terminal Railroad, Inc. (SAPT) has broadened its long-term rail services agreement with the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) to include GPA’s new Mason Mega Rail Terminal.

NJ Transit Advances Walter Rand Transportation Center Improvement Project

NJ TRANSIT is advancing the $250-million overhaul of the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden with today’s release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the design of a new facility to replace the current terminal.  In February, Governor Phil Murphy joined with NJDOT Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, community leaders and local, county and state officials to officially kick off this major investment in Camden.

SEPTA Proposed Fiscal Year 2022 Operating Budget: No Fare Increases, More Service

SEPTA  released a proposed $1.52 billion Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2022. This plan would provide funding for SEPTA to increase service levels in support of the region’s recovery from COVID-19, with no fare increases for customers.

New York City Subway Ridership Reaches New Pandemic Record

MTA New York City Transit officials today announced a new pandemic subway ridership record, with 2,119,655 trips recorded on Friday, April 23. This is the most trips taken on the subway since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City, and first time during the pandemic that subway ridership reached the 2.1 million mark. Subway ridership surpassed the 2 million mark on April 9.
