Pittsburgh’s Port Authority Board Adopts 2022 Budget, Fare Changes

On June 25 Port Authority of Allegheny County’s Board  unanimously approved the transit agency’s 2022 operating and capital budgets, and changes to its fare structure. The 2022 operating budget totals $494.3 million, a 1.8% increase compared to 2021.

The Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern (RBMN) has completed the purchase of 19 miles  of track, from Jim Thorpe to Haucks Junction, Pa., from Carbon County. With this acquisition, the railroad now owns a continuous railroad line from Reading to Scranton, Pa.

SEPTA Board Approves Operating & Capital Budgets for Fiscal Year 2022

SEPTA’s Board approved Operating and Capital Budget proposals for Fiscal Year 2022, advancing plans to fund everyday operations and major improvement projects. SEPTA’s fiscal year covers the 12-month period from July 1 through June 30.

The $1.52 billion Operating Budget will provide funding for SEPTA to increase service levels in support of the region’s recovery from COVID-19, with no fare increases for customers.

CSX Corporation  and Wabtec are partnering to accelerate sustainable rail by modernizing locomotives across CSX’s fleet and implementing advanced digital technologies to deliver significant fuel efficiency and emissions reductions for CSX’s rail operations. The partnership will help CSX in their commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 37 percent by 2030.

Maryland Governor Hogan Announces Howard Street Tunnel Project Advances With Final Environmental Approval

Governor Larry Hogan announced, in conjunction with the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA) and Federal Railroad Administration, that the planned Howard Street Tunnel expansion project in Baltimore has received a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) as part of the project review under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Receipt of the FONSI follows the public review and comment period for the project’s environmental assessment conducted in March and April and represents final NEPA approval for the tunnel project.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending June 19, 2021. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 514,112 carloads and intermodal units, up 12.5 percent compared with the same week last year.

Amtrak and MassDOT Announce Resumption of Second Valley Flyer Roundtrip

Amtrak, in conjunction with MassDOT, is re-launching the second round trip of the Valley Flyer on July 26, 2021, a state supported seven day a week passenger train. The train service was reduced on March 30, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic as members of the public were quarantining and traveling less frequently.
