CSX Corp. Announces Fourth Quarter 2021 Financial Results
CSX Corp. announced fourth quarter 2021 net earnings of $934 million, or $0.42 per share, compared to $760 million, or $0.33 per share in the same period last year. Fourth quarter 2021 operating ratio was 60.1% compared to 57.0% in the prior year period.

Janno Lieber Confirmed as 15th Chair of the MTA
The New York State Senate confirmed Janno Lieber as the Chair and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) following his nomination on Jan. 8 by Governor Kathy Hochul. Lieber has been serving as MTA Acting Chair and CEO since July 2021 and becomes the Authority’s 15th Chair since it was founded in 1968.

Brightline To Begin Crew Training and Qualification Runs Between West Palm Beach and Cocoa
Brightline is beginning the new year with a critical step toward the completion of its intercity rail system connecting Miami and Orlando. Starting the week of January 17, Brightline will begin running qualifying trains between West Palm Beach and Cocoa.

MTA Announces Restoration of New York City Subway Lines
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the restoration of full weekday A. B, J. Z, 6 and 7 service, starting Wednesday, Jan. 19. In order to keep subway service at all 472 subway stations during the COVID-19 Omicron variant surge in New York City, the MTA had adjusted service by suspending the B and Z trains, as well as the rush hour Rockaway Park branch of the A train.

Newly Renovated Brookline Hills Station Is Open
MBTA has announced that the Green Line’s Brookline Hills Station, closed since April 2021, has reopened. While the station was closed to accommodate Brookline High School’s Expansion Project, the MBTA made some renovations and much-needed accessibility improvements to the D branch station.

VIA Rail Canada Reduces Corridor Service In Response To Omicron Spread
Given the impact on travel demand of tighter COVID-19 restrictions due to the rapid spreading of the Omicron Variant, VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) will temporarily reduce frequencies in the Québec City-Windsor corridor starting Wednesday, January 19, 2022.

U.S. Department of Transportation Announces Amit Bose as 15th Senate-Confirmed Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that Amit Bose has been confirmed as the 15th Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Nominated by President Biden on April 22, 2021, Mr. Bose, who is currently serving as Deputy Administrator, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on January 12, 2022. He is the first person of South-Asian descent to lead FRA.

Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Paul J. Wiedefeld said he will not resume the placement of 7000-series trains into passenger service for about 90 days to allow Metro engineering and mechanical experts time to focus on root cause analysis and acquire technology to measure 7000-series wheelsets.

CN yesterday evening submitted a notice of intent to file a responsive application on February 28, 2022, with the Surface Transportation Board (“STB”) in accordance with the STB’s procedural schedule for review of the pending Canadian Pacific (“CP”) and Kansas City Southern (“KCS”) merger (collectively “CP-KCS”).
