Rail Traffic for April and the Week Ending April 30, 2022
The Association of American Railroads reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending April 30, 2022, as well as volumes for April 2022.
U.S. railroads originated 919,703 carloads in April 2022, down 3.4 percent, or 31,929 carloads, from April 2021. U.S. railroads also originated 1,083,151 containers and trailers in April 2022, down 7.7 percent, or 90,869 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in April 2022 were 2,002,854, down 5.8 percent, or 122,798 carloads and intermodal units from April 2021.

Norfolk Southern Headquarters Awarded LEED Gold Certification
Norfolk Southern Corporation announced that its new corporate headquarters building at 650 West Peachtree has been awarded LEED® Gold certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and an international symbol of excellence. Gold certification was awarded for the building’s design and construction, which includes sustainable site development, water conservation, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

Union Pacific Donates Steam Locomotives, Passenger Cars for Restoration
Union Pacific Railroad today donated a small portion of its heritage fleet to non-profit Railroading Heritage of Midwest America (RRHMA). The donation allows Union Pacific to focus on its remaining fleet, which includes the world’s largest steam locomotive, the Big Boy UP 4014, and the fastest, the Living Legend UP 844.

Proposed Creation of Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority
Jim Gerlach, President & CEO of the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA), issued the following statement of support for the creation of Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority: “GRCA is a proud supporter of the efforts to return passenger rail from Reading to Philadelphia and beyond.
