The Morristown & Erie Railway proudly unveiled locomotive M&E 26 on June 20, 2026, emerging from the Morristown Engine House through a dramatic shower of sparks and thick cloud of fog to a round cheers and applause as its tribute to the 250th anniversary of the United States. The locomotive was revealed during a special evening ceremony at the railroad’s Morristown headquarters, drawing railfans, employees, and members of the community to celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial.
Originally built by EMD in 1977 as Southern Railway MP15DC No. 2354, the locomotive has been renumbered M&E 26 in honor of the 2026 milestone. The locomotive’s striking paint scheme pays homage to its Southern Railway heritage while incorporating the Morristown & Erie’s signature red colors. Railroad crews completed the transformation in-house over the course of several weeks.
The design also recognizes Morristown’s unique role in American history. During the harsh winter of 1779–1780, General George Washington established his headquarters in Morristown, less than half a mile from the M&E’s current headquarters, making the community a key location in the fight for independence. To honor that connection, M&E 26 carries special lettering including “Washington Headquarters” and “Crossroads of the Revolution.”
Following its unveiling, M&E 26 will serve as both a rolling tribute to America’s 250th birthday and a symbol of the railroad’s continued commitment to preserving history while supporting commerce throughout New Jersey. The locomotive is expected to see regular freight service across the Morristown & Erie system while representing the railroad during America 250 celebrations throughout the year.
