Weekday Fitchburg Line Service to be Replaced with Bus Shuttles Between Littleton and Alewife

The MBTA today announced that train service on the Fitchburg Line of Commuter Rail will be replaced by bus service between Littleton and Alewife Stations beginning Monday, March 1 and running through Friday, May 2. This diversion is necessary to accommodate installation of Positive Train Control (PTC), a federally mandated anti-collision safety technology. Regular Commuter Rail service will operate between Wachusett and Littleton Stations and passengers will board shuttle buses for service to stations between Littleton and Alewife. At Alewife, passengers may board MBTA Red Line trains for connections to the rest of the rapid transit system in Boston. Shuttle buses will not stop at Silver Hill or Hastings Stations. In addition to the local bus shuttles, an express shuttle will operate between Alewife, South Acton and Littleton Stations. Passengers should allow additional travel time and note that bicycles will not be permitted on shuttle buses. In response to the December 2020 MBTA board vote on Forging Ahead service changes, there is no longer weekend service on the Fitchburg Line. Weekend service will not be replaced with bus shuttles.
