Reading & Northern Railroad is taking a major step forward in enhancing railroad safety and operating efficiency with the continued installation of its signal system along its Main Line between Reading and Pittston, Pennsylvania.
Reading & Northern is advancing toward completion of the signal system on the entirety of its 114-mile Main Line, with an additional 10 miles of signals being phased into service as part of this important
initiative. The project represents a significant investment in the railroad’s infrastructure and its ongoing commitment to safe and efficient rail operations. The initiative is being funded entirely by Reading &
Northern, without outside funding, and builds on extensive work to restore signal infrastructure along the southern portion of the Main Line. Much of this system had to be rebuilt from the ground up across
approximately 60 miles, where signals had been removed decades earlier.
The signal system plays a vital role in ensuring that our trains not only operate safely, but also efficiently. Lines that lack signal protection are referred to as “dark territory”, meaning that some type of authority is
required to operate over the track. This could be verbal permission from the dispatcher; or paper authority. In addition, the signal system also will detect if there are track issues, such as broken rails, and provide
the crew with a more restrictive signal. Additional details about the project will be announced soon.
