The Railroad & Industrial Preservation Society has announced that Norfolk Southern has awarded a $10,000 Thriving Communities grant to assist with the restoration of Lehigh & New England 611. The society is deeply appreciative of the generosity of NS and their recognition of the project’s significance. The restoration is based in a town served by NS: Topton, PA on the NS Reading Line. Our “home road,” The Allentown & Auburn Railroad, interchanges with NS just a few hundred yards from where the work on #611 is being done. There’s a historic connection, too, as the longest segment of the LNE to survive the 64-years since it folded is Norfolk Southern’s busy Cement Secondary from Bethlehem to Stockertown, Pa.
