NJ Transit has completed the application of the vinyl wrap on ALP45DP 4503, commemorating Atlas Model Railroad Company’s 100th anniversary in 2024. Based in Hillside, N.J., the company was founded by Czech immigrant Stephan Schaffan in 1924 to produce a number of hobby products. Starting with a line of sectional track, flex track, and turnouts, the company later expanded into injection-molded plastic structure kits, rolling stock, and locomotives.

Stephan Schaffan’s daughter Diane and her husband Tom Haedrich continued to lead Atlas until 2013. Paul Graf was named chief executive officer, while Jarrett Schaffan Haedrich, great-grandson of Atlas founder Stephan J. Schaffan Sr., was promoted from vice president of marketing to chief operating officer. The locomotive will soon enter service on NJ Transit. Atlas will be producing N and HO scale versions of the wrapped 4503.
