Grand Central Madison Wins UNESCO’s 2024 Prix Versailles Interior Award for World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Station

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced that Grand Central Madison, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) terminal, was awarded UNESCO’s 2024 Prix Versailles Interior Award for the World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Station category. This global architecture and design award for recently opened or renovated metro stations is selected by the Prix Versailles jury, composed of architects, designers and cultural figures around the world. The announcement was made at the Prix Versailles World Ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.

In September, the Prix Versailles Selection Committee chose Grand Central Madison for the World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Stations 2024 List, along with Schafbergbahn Station in St. Wolfgang, Austria; Bell Station in Melbourne, Australia; Beijing Station in Beijing, China Toulouse; Matabiau Station in Toulouse, France; and Chiaia Metro Station in Naples, Italy. From the list, the World Judges Panel awarded three World Titles: Prix Versailles, Interior, and Exterior.

The Prix Versailles, a series of architectural competitions that shine a light on the finest contemporary projects worldwide, recognizes contemporary projects that leave extraordinary imprints on their living environments. The award criteria include the innovativeness, creativity, reflection of local heritage and ecological efficiency of each project.

Phase One Milestone of MTA Park Avenue Viaduct Replacement Project

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a major Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) milestone with the completion of bridge replacement work on Phase 1 of the Park Avenue Viaduct Replacement Project. Through 128 bridge installations, the project replaced 8,240 track feet of the aging 132-year-old structure, all without disrupting Metro-North service. Thanks to strong project management and an innovative construction approach, the project as a whole is $93 million under budget and 51 months ahead of schedule.

Historic Railroad Equipment Display at Hoboken Terminal

On Sunday, October 12, the public is invited to Historic Hoboken Terminal to join NJ TRANSIT in celebrating New Jersey’s rich railroad history with some of the agency’s iconic heritage locomotives and railroad equipment – all while learning about career opportunities available on the railroad. “Meet Our Rail Fleet” will be held on Sunday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. near Track 17 in Hoboken Terminal. Admission is free.
