CN to Acquire Iowa Northern Railway - Railpace Newsmagazine

CN announced that it has signed and closed an agreement to acquire Iowa Northern Railway (IANR), which operates approximately 275 track miles in Iowa connecting to CN’s U.S. rail network. The transaction closed into an independent voting trust pending regulatory review of the transaction by the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB).

IANR serves upper Midwest agricultural and industrial markets covering many goods, including biofuels and grain. This transaction represents a meaningful opportunity to support the growth of local business by creating single-line service to North American destinations, while preserving access to existing carrier options.

AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending July 5, 2025

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending July 5, 2025. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 443,049 carloads and intermodal units, up 5.0 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending July 5 were 204,513 carloads, up 4.8 percent compared with the same week in 2024, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 238,536 containers and trailers, up 5.2 percent compared to 2024.
