MTA Board to Approve Option to Purchase Additional 435 R211 Subway Cars, Including 80 Open-Gangway Cars
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit Committee approved an order for 435 additional R211 subway cars, authorizing the full MTA Board to consider the order on Wednesday at their monthly meeting. This order includes 355 closed-end cars and 80 open-gangway cars. The option would bring the total number of R211 cars ordered to 1,610. There are currently 345 R211 cars in service throughout the New York City Transit system, including on the A and C lines and the Staten Island Railway.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces $13.4 Million Funding Opportunity for Transit-Oriented Development
The U.S. Department of Transportation today announced the availability of approximately $13.4 million in competitive grant funds through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Pilot Program for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Planning. The funding will support local planning and investment near transit hubs to promote sustainable, livable, and equitable communities.

TSA Issues New Cybersecurity Requirements for Railroads
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced a new cybersecurity security directive regulating designated passenger and freight railroad carriers. The announcement demonstrates the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to strengthen the cybersecurity of U.S. critical infrastructure. Building on the TSA’s work to strengthen defenses in other transportation modes, this security directive will further enhance cybersecurity preparedness and resilience for the nation’s railroad operations.

Amtrak and PennDOT Restore Keystone Service
In coordination with state partners at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, beginning Monday, April 25, Amtrak is adding additional Keystone Service trains (operating between Harrisburg, Philadelphia and New York) in response to anticipated increased demand. Two new weekday trains will also be added and on the weekends, all pre-pandemic Philadelphia to Harrisburg service will be fully restored.

Norfolk Southern Corporation announced three promotions in executive management. Michael McClellan is appointed Senior Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer. Nabanita Nag is appointed Senior Vice President & Chief Legal Officer. Nag succeeds Lorri Kleine, who retires on March 1, 2022. Clay Moore is appointed Vice President & Controller. Moore succeeds Clyde “Jake” Allison, who retires on March 1, 2022.
