SEPTA Pauses King of Prussia Rail Project
SEPTA is pausing the King of Prussia Rail project following further review of rising costs, which have been exacerbated by inflation and high interest rates. The project is not recommended for federal New Starts funding in Fiscal Year 2024, and SEPTA will use resources that had been allocated for KOP Rail to bolster essential infrastructure work.

BLET Members Ratify Springfield Terminal Implementing Agreement
Members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) employed by the Springfield Terminal Railway Company (ST) (an affiliate of Pan Am Railways) today ratified a New York Dock Implementing Agreement with the ST and Pittsburgh and Shawmut Railroad LLC d/b/a Berkshire & Eastern Railroad (B&E) (a subsidiary of Genesee and Wyoming). The agreement governs approximately 60 members.

CP Sets Date for Combination with KCS, Announces CPKC Executive Leadership Team
Canadian Pacific said today that, on April 14, 2023, it will exercise the authority granted by the U.S. Surface Transportation Board’s (“STB”) March 15 final decision and combine with Kansas City Southern (“KCS”) to create Canadian Pacific Kansas City, the first and only single-line railway connecting the U.S., Mexico and Canada. CP today also announced the executive leadership team that will lead CPKC.

Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending March 11, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending March 11, 2023. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 458,629 carloads and intermodal units, down 7.6 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending March 11 were 229,246 carloads, down 1.5 percent compared with the same week in 2022, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 229,383 containers and trailers, down 13.0 percent compared to 2022.

Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern combination approved by U.S. Surface Transportation Board
Canadian Pacific (“CP”) and Kansas City Southern (“KCS”) said today the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (“STB”) issued a decision approving the CP and KCS joint merger application, subject to certain conditions, thereby authorizing the two railways to combine to form Canadian Pacific Kansas City (“CPKC”), the first single-line railway connecting the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Amtrak’s Adirondack Will Resume Service
After months of advocacy, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced that Amtrak will reopen the Adirondack line, the upstate rail service between Montreal and New York City that has been suspended for more than two years due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

First R211 Subway Cars Roll Into Service on the A Line
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), on March 10th, announced that the standard R211 subway cars are being phased into service on the subway line. The cars are part of a 535-car order of the R211a model, which includes 440 cars with state-of-the-art amenities, 15 Staten Island Railway five-car trains and 20 cars with the open gangway feature.

Amtrak and Southern Rail Commission to Seek Federal Dtudy for New Long Distance Service across Mississippi and Louisiana to Texas
Amtrak will partner with the Southern Rail Commission (SRC) to apply for federal funds to study a new service between New York City, Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth by extending a section of the popular Amtrak Crescent train from Meridian, Miss., across Mississippi and Louisiana to Texas along Interstate 20.
