Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending December 9, 2023
For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 499,094 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.7 percent compared with the same week last year.

Norfolk Southern Secures Georgia Inland Port Contract:
Norfolk Southern Corporation will provide rail service to the Georgia Ports Authority’s (GPA) new inland terminal in Gainesville, Georgia. The Blue Ridge Connector will improve Northeast Georgia’s link to the global supply chain in concert with the Port of Savannah’s 35 global container ship services

MBTA Green Line Extension Update
The MBTA announced that the work to re-gauge the track along the Green Line Extension (GLX) will not be completed by Monday, December 11, as initially anticipated under the plan presented by the project’s contractor, GLX Constructors (GLXC), which requested additional time of the MBTA.

SEPTA Will No Longer Accept Tokens
While the sale of tokens ended in 2018 in conjunction with the introduction of the SEPTA Key card, SEPTA continued to accept tokens as payment on buses and trolleys and via SEPTA Fare kiosks located at stations and bus loops. At midnight on December 31, 2023, SEPTA will permanently retire the inventory, no longer accepting tokens as a form of payment.

Maryland Light Rail Temporarily Suspends All Service for Emergency Inspection and Repairs
Effective 12:01 a.m. on Friday, December 8, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration will temporarily suspend Light Rail service at all stops in order to perform emergency inspections of every vehicle in the fleet.

President Biden Announces $8.2 Billion in New Grants for High-Speed Rail Projects Nationwide
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) today announced that it has awarded $8.2 billion for 10 passenger rail projects across the country while announcing corridor planning activities that will impact every region nationwide. This unprecedented investment in America’s nationwide intercity passenger rail network builds on a $16.4 billion investment announced last month for 25 projects of national significance along America’s busiest rail corridor.
