Amtrak Continues Partnership to Offer Ferry Service from Providence to Newport via RIDOT-funded Shuttle
Amtrak announced its continued summer partnership with Seastreak, the operator of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s (RIDOT) seasonal Providence-Newport Ferry, for hassle-free booking and passage for Amtrak passengers directly to Newport, R.I. Upon arrival to Providence Station, customers can enjoy convenient shuttle connections funded by RIDOT to and from the Providence Ferry Terminal now through Monday, October 9.

Alstom’s Hydrogen Train Enters Revenue Service in Charlevoix in Quebec
On June 17, 2023, a hundred passengers boarded the Coradia iLint for the first hydrogen train journey ever on the North American continent. The train connected the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency in Quebec City to Baie-Saint-Paul, a 90-kilometre trip in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Charlevoix Biosphere Reserve along the St. Lawrence River.

MTA Communications Director Tim Minton on July 5 Incident at New Haven Union Station
At approximately 8:35pm, a report of shots fired at New Haven Union Station was received by MTA Police Department, which discovered a single male victim had been shot multiple times.

Weekly Rail Traffic for June and the Week Ending July 1, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending July 1, 2023, as well as volumes for June 2023. U.S. railroads originated 903,397 carloads in June 2023, down 0.2 percent, or 1,931 carloads, from June 2022. U.S. railroads also originated 988,766 containers and trailers in June 2023, down 7.0 percent, or 74,306 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in June 2023 were 1,892,163, down 3.9 percent, or 76,237 carloads and intermodal units from June 2022.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is advancing on Phase 2 of the Second Avenue Subway with the solicitation of the first contract for construction of the future extension of the Second Avenue Subway to 125th Street in Harlem.

CSX Honors Seaboard System Railroad Heritage with New Locomotive Paint Design
CSX has unveiled a newly repainted locomotive honoring the Seaboard System Railroad, one of the heritage lines that merged to form the modern company. The locomotive has been repainted with a special hybrid design and renumbered CSX 1982 to commemorate a defining year in the birth of CSX.

MBTA Worcester Service Line Temporary Suspension of Mid-Day Trains
Beginning on Monday, July 10, 2023, the Worcester Line of the MBTA Commuter Rail will operate on a temporarily modified weekday schedule that reduces the number of midday trains to allow work on multiple infrastructure improvements along the Worcester Line.
