Weekly Rail Traffic for July and the Week Ending August 3, 2024
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending August 3, 2024, as well as volumes for July 2024. U.S. railroads originated 1,073,191 carloads in July 2024, down 2.1 percent, or 23,353 carloads, from July 2023. U.S. railroads also originated 1,319,818 containers and trailers in July 2024, up 8.4 percent, or 102,549 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in July 2024 were 2,393,009, up 3.4 percent, or 79,196 carloads and intermodal units from July 2023.

CSX Corp. Announces Second Quarter 2024 Results
CSX Corp. announced second quarter 2024 operating income of $1.45 billion compared to $1.47 billion in the prior year period. Net earnings were $963 million, or $0.49 per diluted share, compared to $984 million, or $0.49 per diluted share, in the same period last year. Total volume of 1.58 million units for the quarter was 2% higher compared to second quarter 2023.

Norfolk Southern and ATDA initiate C3RS Pilot program
Norfolk Southern Corporation and the American Train Dispatchers Association (ATDA), in partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), announced Tuesday their joint participation in the FRA’s Confidential Close Call Reporting System (C3RS). This pilot program is designed to enhance communication and transparency to help improve railroad safety.

MBTA Reaches Significant Milestone for South Coast Rail: Keolis Has Assumed Dispatcher Duties
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announced that the dispatching responsibilities for the South Coast Rail territory has been transferred to MBTA’s Railroad Operations division and will now be performed by its operating partner Keolis Commuter Services, marking a significant milestone in the project’s progress.

Norfolk Southern Invests in the 3B Corridor
Norfolk Southern Corporation is investing to grow capacity on a key rail line in the state of Alabama, the 3B Corridor, which connects markets in northern and central Alabama to the Port of Mobile and destinations worldwide. The more-than $200 million investment positions the line to accommodate expected growth in several sectors as the Southeast progresses as an economic powerhouse for the US economy.

Justice Department Files Complaint Against Norfolk Southern to Stop Amtrak Passenger Train Delays
The United States filed a civil complaint on Tuesday, July 30, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia alleging that the Norfolk Southern Corporation and Norfolk Southern Railway Company (collectively, Norfolk Southern) delays passenger trains on Amtrak’s Crescent Route in violation of federal law.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending July 27, 2024. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 508,496 carloads and intermodal units, up 5.3 percent compared with the same week last year.

LIRR Announces Schedule Changes Effective Tuesday, Sept. 3
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) announced that new schedules will go into effect on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and the railroad will – for the first time in its history – double the number of morning trains that run from Oyster Bay directly to Penn Station.
