MTA Receives Top Safety and Security Awards from American Public Transportation Association
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), Metro-North Railroad, and New York City Transit (NYCT) have won American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Gold awards for safety and security initiatives. These awards, named as Gold Awards for the top award, recognized transit agencies for proactive and innovative safety and security programs.

Amtrak Mardi Gras Service starting August 18
Tickets are now available for new twice-daily Amtrak intercity train service starting Aug. 18 between Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans, along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The new state-sponsored Amtrak Mardi Gras Service will offer convenient morning and evening departures from both cities – plus a promotion to introduce Amtrak Guest Rewards to the region.

SEPTA Board Approves FY26 Budget with Devastating Service Cuts & Fare Increases
Without action in Harrisburg to provide new funding for transit, on June 26 the SEPTA Board voted to approve the Fiscal Year 2026 Operating Budget, which will cut service by 45% and raise fares 21.5% to fill a $213 million recurring budget deficit.

Maryland Transit Administration Releases MARC Growth and Transformation Plan
Following a comprehensive analysis and extensive stakeholder and community engagement, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration has announced the publication of the MARC Growth and Transformation Plan. This Plan is a major milestone in advancing future rail initiatives and outlines 5-year, 10-year, and unconstrained service scenarios. The Plan details service opportunities, projects needed to achieve each scenario, associated costs and next steps for Maryland’s passenger rail service. New York Governor Hochul Announces MTA to Purchase More Than 300 Modern Commuter Railcars
Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Finance Committee approved the purchase of M-9A Passenger Railcars today, June 23. This order includes 316 M-9A cars — 160 cars will be allocated to the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) fleet and 156 for Metro-North Railroad.

Next Phase of NJ Transit’s Raritan River Bridge
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, joined by NJ TRANSIT and State officials, to celebrate the groundbreaking of the next critical phase of the new Raritan River Bridge on the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL). This kicks off construction and installation of the center span that lifts vertically to allow for marine traffic to pass underneath and will replace the current 117-year-old swing bridge, which rotates open. The bridge connects rail traffic between Perth Amboy and South Amboy across the Raritan River.
