New York Governor Hochul Announces MTA to Purchase More Than 300 Modern Commuter Railcars
Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Finance Committee approved the purchase of M-9A Passenger Railcars today, June 23. This order includes 316 M-9A cars — 160 cars will be allocated to the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) fleet and 156 for Metro-North Railroad.

Next Phase of NJ Transit’s Raritan River Bridge
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, joined by NJ TRANSIT and State officials, to celebrate the groundbreaking of the next critical phase of the new Raritan River Bridge on the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL). This kicks off construction and installation of the center span that lifts vertically to allow for marine traffic to pass underneath and will replace the current 117-year-old swing bridge, which rotates open. The bridge connects rail traffic between Perth Amboy and South Amboy across the Raritan River.

AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending June 21, 2025
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending June 21, 2025. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 487,328 carloads and intermodal units, up 0.4 percent compared with the same week last year.

NIH to Fund Long-Term Health Studies for East Palestine After Train Disaster
At the urging of Vice President JD Vance, under the leadership of U.S. Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched a five-year, $10 million research initiative to assess and address the long-term health outcomes stemming from the 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending June 14, 2025. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 485,810 carloads and intermodal units, down 1.5 percent compared with the same week last year.

Washington Metro to launch Automatic Train Operation on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines on June 15

Metro-North Railroad Unveils Seventh Locomotive from Heritage Series
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Metro-North Railroad unveiled its seventh rebranded locomotive as part of a Heritage Series to highlight the railroad’s 40 years of service to the public. Unlike the previous six rebrands which wrapped the engines, the rebranding of locomotive No. 203 was painted by Metro-North employees in the North White Plains Paint Shop.

Norfolk Southern board of directors elects Richard Anderson as chair
Norfolk Southern Corporation’s Board of Directors has unanimously appointed Richard H. Anderson, the former CEO and Executive Chairman of Delta Air Lines, President of Optum Health, CEO of Northwest Airlines, and most recently President and CEO of Amtrak, as the independent chair of the board, effective immediately. Anderson has served on Norfolk Southern’s board since May of 2024.
