MTA Moves Forward with Ultraviolet Pilot for Disinfecting Full Trains

MTA New York City Transit officials today demonstrated how the MTA is piloting the use of Ultraviolet disinfecting technology across entire train sets. The pilot is initially focused on identifying ways to eradicate COVID-19 in rolling stock, including car classes R188, R62, R46, R68, and R160 at Corona, Coney Island, Jamaica and Pelham Maintenance Shops.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending June 6, 2020. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 433,171 carloads and intermodal units, down 15.6 percent compared with the same week last year.

VRE Extends Operations and Maintenance Contracts with Keolis

The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) will continue to utilize Keolis Rail Services Virginia, LLC for operating and maintenance services. On the recommendation of the VRE Operations Board, the commuter rail service’s parent commissions last week approved extending one contract and amending another.

Officials from New York City Transit announced that subways and buses saw 213,548 more riders on Monday, June 8 compared to the week before as New York City began Phase 1 reopening. June 8 marked the first time that subway ridership reached 800,000 since before the pandemic began.

Newburyport/Rockport Trains between Rockport and West Gloucester Replaced with Shuttle Buses through Summer 2021

To accommodate construction as part of the Gloucester Drawbridge Replacement Project, the MBTA today announced that the current diversion on the Newburyport/Rockport Line that is replacing all weekday and weekend Commuter Rail trains with free shuttle buses between Rockport, Gloucester, and West Gloucester Stations will last through summer 2021.
