Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern to Create America’s First Transcontinental Railroad
Union Pacific Corporation and Norfolk Southern Corporation today announced an agreement to create America’s first transcontinental railroad. These legendary companies will seamlessly connect over 50,000 route miles across 43 states from the East Coast to the West Coast, linking approximately 100 ports and nearly every corner of North America. This combination will transform the U.S. supply chain, unleash the industrial strength of American manufacturing, and create new sources of economic growth and workforce opportunity that preserves union jobs.

Norfolk Southern Reports Second Quarter 2025 Results
Norfolk Southern Corporation announced Tuesday its second quarter 2025 financial results. For the quarter, revenue was $3.1 billion, income from railway operations was $1.2 billion, operating ratio was 62.2%, and diluted earnings per share were $3.41. Recoveries related to the Eastern Ohio incident exceeded incremental costs in the quarter.

Reading & Northern Railroad Passenger Department Celebrates 40th Anniversary
The Reading & Northern Railroad Passenger Department celebrated a momentous milestone on Sunday, July 13, 2025, its 40th anniversary. Four decades have passed since the inaugural passenger train operated over the original 13-mile Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad from Temple to Hamburg, PA. Today, the Passenger Department is busy as ever, overseeing multiple trains every week for most of the year.

CSX Corp. Announces Second Quarter 2025 Results
CSX Corp. announced second quarter 2025 operating income of $1.28 billion compared to $1.45 billion in the prior year period. Net income was $829 million, or $0.44 per diluted share, compared to $963 million, or $0.49 per diluted share, in the same period last year. Total volume of 1.58 million units for the quarter was flat compared to second quarter 2024 and up 4% sequentially.

AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending July 12, 2025
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending July 12, 2025. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 496,188 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.6 percent compared with the same week last year.

CSX, CPKC Create Faster Freight Solutions with Southeast Mexico Express
CSX Corporation and Canadian Pacific Kansas City have created a new rail transportation routing option for customers across the southern U.S. with the Southeast Mexico Express (SMX), the new east-west Class 1 corridor that connects shippers in Mexico, Texas and U.S. southeast.

SEPTA Service Cuts
Without state legislative action on a permanent funding solution, SEPTA is unable to maintain its current service levels. In order to close the structural operating budget deficit, SEPTA is forced to cut nearly half of its service, reducing service levels across the region and eliminating dozens of routes. Initial service cuts will go into effect late August 2025 with additional cuts going into effect January 2026.

Upcoming Track Work on the Metro-North Danbury Branch Line
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting riders that due to necessary track work on the Danbury Branch Line, substitute bus service will replace all train service from Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 17, 2025. Normal train service will resume on Monday, August 18, 2025.

NJ Transit Adopt Fiscal Year 2026 Operating Budget and Authorized Capital Funding
The NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors has adopted the agency’s Fiscal Year 2026 (FY 2026) operating budget, local programs budget and authorized capital funding. The budgets continue investments in infrastructure and equipment to maintain the system in a state of good repair and enhance the overall customer experience.
