MTA and Google Public Sector Announce Preventive Track Maintenance Pilot Program
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced a pilot program in partnership with Google Public Sector, building on the success of its proven TrackInspect prototype, to proactively detect potential track defects before they escalate into operational issues that disrupt service to customers.

Free South Coast Rail Weekend Service Through April
Governor Maura Healey and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) have announced free weekend service and parking to celebrate the beginning of South Coast Rail service. The MBTA is on schedule to begin South Coast Rail passenger service the morning of March 24, 2025, pending final FRA approval.

AAR Reports Weekly Rail Traffic for the Week Ending February 22, 2025
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending February 22, 2025. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 458,513 carloads and intermodal units, down 5.1 percent compared with the same week last year.

Amtrak Extends for Two Additional Months Current Empire Service Levels Between Albany and New York City
Amtrak today announced the extension of the expanded temporary Empire Service through Sunday, April 27. On Monday, April 28, the new spring schedule will take effect to allow Amtrak to rehabilitate the vital East River Tunnel in New York City, which was damaged in Superstorm Sandy.

Canada Announces Alto High Speed Rail Project
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that Canada is developing a high-speed rail network in the Toronto-Quebec City corridor. This transformative rail network will span approximately 1,000 km and reach speeds of up to 300 km/hour, with stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City. Once operational, current travel times will be slashed in half – getting you from Montréal to Toronto in three hours. The official name of this high-speed rail service will be Alto.
