New Portal North Bridge Construction Gets Green Light With “Notice To Proceed”
Governor Phil Murphy and NJ TRANSIT announced the issuance of the “Notice to Proceed” on the new Portal North Bridge project. The bridge, which is part of the larger Gateway Program, will improve capacity and reliability for rail travel between New Jersey and New York City.

Starting next week, there will be service changes on the Newburyport/Rockport Commuter Rail Line to accommodate ongoing work to significantly improve signals, track, and bridges. During this construction, bus shuttles will replace trains on specific dates.

President Biden, USDOT Announce More than $20 Billion for Communities of All Sizes to Support Transit This Year
President Biden and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced a more than $20 billion investment in American transit, thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The funding levels, detailed by FTA in apportionment tables for each of 30 programs for Fiscal Year 2022, will provide 58% more funding, enabling transit agencies to modernize and expand services for residents in communities large and small.

Rail Traffic for March and the Week Ending April 2, 2022
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending April 2, 2022, as well as volumes for March 2022. U.S. railroads originated 1,169,546 carloads in March 2022, up 1.2 percent, or 13,456 carloads, from March 2021. U.S. railroads also originated 1,338,138 containers and trailers in March 2022, down 6.4 percent, or 92,170 units, from the same month last year. Combined U.S. carload and intermodal originations in March 2022 were 2,507,684, down 3 percent, or 78,714 carloads and intermodal units from March 2021.

STB Denies Request for Mediation in Amtrak Operations in Gulf Coast
The Surface Transportation Board, on April 1, issued a decision denying a motion by CSX Transportation, Inc. (CSX), Norfolk Southern Railway Company (NS), and the Alabama Port Authority (Port) requesting that the Board order Board-sponsored mediation regarding the application of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) to operate Gulf Coast service.
