New York Governor Hochul Rides Inaugural LIRR Train To Grand Central Madison
New York Governor Kathy Hochul and MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber yesterday rode the inaugural Long Island Rail Road train to Grand Central Madison, which arrived at the terminal platform at 11:07 a.m. The train was the first of Grand Central Direct trains now operating between Jamaica and Grand Central Madison between 6:15 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on weekends. Trains are running every 30 minutes in both directions during weekday midday periods as well as on weekends, and once per hour during peak periods – arriving in Grand Central between 6:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and departing between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Upcoming Service Changes on MBTA’s Orange, Green, Red, Haverhill Commuter Rail Lines in February
The MBTA today announced upcoming service changes next month on the Orange, Green, and Red lines as well as the Haverhill Commuter Rail Line. Because of the continued demolition of the Government Center Garage by private developer HYM Construction, Orange and Green line service changes will take place in February in the downtown Boston area

Rail Traffic for the Week Ending January 21, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending January 21, 2023. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 467,485 carloads and intermodal units, down 2.1 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending January 21 were 230,545 carloads, up 3.3 percent compared with the same week in 2022, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 236,940 containers and trailers, down 6.7 percent compared to 2022.

MTA Announces Long Island Rail Road Service to Grand Central Madison to Begin Wednesday, Jan. 25
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced Long Island Rail Road service to Grand Central Madison will begin Wednesday, Jan. 25. The first train is scheduled to originate at Jamaica at 10:45 a.m. and run express to Grand Central Madison where it is scheduled to arrive at 11:07 a.m. For at least three weeks, LIRR will operate limited shuttle service between Jamaica and Grand Central Madison so customers can acquaint themselves with the new terminal as existing schedules continue.

Amtrak Starts the Process for New Overnight Trains
A new era at Amtrak accelerates this year, with as many as ten manufacturers submitting their ideas on replacement railcars for world-famous routes such as the Auto Train, California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Empire Builder and Southwest Chief. This marks the first formal step to completely reequip the Amtrak Long Distance Network that provides vital service on 14 overnight routes from coast to coast.

Durham Area Commuter Rail Feasibility Report Released
GoTriangle, Durham, North Carolina’s regional transit authority, is proposing a commuter rail line. It has issued the Greater Triangle Commuter Rail Feasibility study. It is seeking public input on options for commuter rail service, as identified in the report released.

Rail Traffic for the Week Ending January 14, 2023
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending January 14, 2023. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 486,000 carloads and intermodal units, down 1.7 percent compared with the same week last year.

MBTA Announces New Schedules on Providence and Franklin Lines
Beginning on Monday, January 23, 2023, the Providence and Franklin Lines of the MBTA Commuter Rail will operate on new schedules that makes minor adjustments designed to avoid delays related to train traffic and improve on time performance. The Providence Line schedule has also been adjusted to accommodate service at the new Pawtucket station.
